The Difference Between Seeking Refuge and Taking Refuge, and some forgotten Sunnan concerning Taking Refuge

Bismillaah Al-Hamdulillaah wa salatu wa salaamu 'ala rasulullaah Amma-ba'd The Difference Between Seeking Refuge and Taking Refuge, and some forgotten Sunnan concerning Taking Refuge Imam Ibnul-Qayyim (rahimahullaah) gave a beautiful explanation of taking refuge (a'oodhu), and from that long explanation, he said: "Its essential meaning is to flee from that which you fear will harm you to that which will safeguard you from it." ...The meaning of a'oodhu is: "I take refuge, guard myself and take precaution." Also, Ibnul-Qayyim explained the difference between seeking refuge (asta'idhu) and taking refuge (a'oodhu): "If it is asked: When one is commanded to take refuge with Allaah, why does the form of the command carry a "seen" and "ta"? For example in His saying: فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ ...Seek refuge with Allaah from Shaitaan (Satan), the outcast (the cursed one). (An-Nahl, ayah 98) Yet one says: I take refuge (a'oodhu) and 'I took refuge' (ta'awwadhtu) without including the "seen" and "ta"? The reply is: The "seen" and "ta" are grammatically used to denote a person's seeking something. Therefore when one says, 'Asta'idhu with Allaah,' he is saying, 'I seek refuge with Him.' When he says, 'Astaghfirullaah,' he is saying, ''I seek the forgiveness of Allaah." However, when the person says, 'I take refuge (a'oodhu) with Allaah,' he is actually implementing and realizing what he seeks, because he sought refuge and protection with Allaah. There is a clear difference between actually taking refuge and seeking refuge. Therefore, because the one who is taking refuge is actually recoursing to Allaah, and holding firmly to Him, he says the verb that denotes this rather than saying the verb that denotes that he only seeks this. The opposite is true for the saying, 'Astaghfirullaah' (I seek the forgiveness of Allaah), for in this case the person is asking Allaah to forgive him. Therefore, when he says, 'Astaghfirullaah,' he is implementing what he desires because the meaning of this statement is, 'I ask Allaah that He forgive me.' This then is the best way of seeking refuge, and it was for this reason that the Prophet (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) used to say: "I take refuge with Allaah from the accursed Shaytaan," and "I take refuge with Allaah's perfect words," and '"I take refuge with the Might and Power of Allaah,' saying, 'a'oodhu' rather than 'asta'idhu.' Indeed, this is what Allaah taught him to say with His words: قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ Say: "I take refuge with (Allaah) the Lord of the daybreak, (Al-Falaq, ayah 1) قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ Say: "I take refuge with (Allaah) the Lord of mankind, (An-Nas, ayah 1) Employing the word 'a'oodhu' rather than 'asta'idhu.' (Ibnul al-Qayyim, Bada`i al-Fawa`id, vol. 1, pg. 439-441; Tafsir al-Qayyim, pp. 538-541) _____________________________________________________ Forgotten Sunnan regarding Taking refuge in Allaah Aboo Dawood recorded on the authority of Abu Sa'eed al-Khudree (radiallaahu 'anhu) that: When the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) stood at night [for salat, he would commence the salat] by saying the takbeer and then saying, 'Subhanak Allaahumma wa bihamdika wa tabarakasmuka wa ta'aala jadduka, wa laa ilaaha ghayruk.' Then he would say, 'La illaaha il Allaah' three times, and then he would say 'Allaahu akbar' three times, and then he would say, 'Aoodhubillaahi As-Samee' al-'Aleem min ash-shaytaani r-rajeem - min hamzihee wa nafkhihee wa nafthihee.' Aboo Dawood [English Translation. 1/198, #774] and at-Tirmidhee #242. It was declared "saheeh" by al-Albanee, al-Irwa' #341. Subhanak Allaahumma wa bihamdika wa tabarakasmuka wa ta'aala jadduka, wa la ilaaha ghayruk means -----> You are glorified (free from any imperfection) O Allaah, and praised! Your Name is blessed; Your Majesty is Exalted, and there is no True Deity except you. La illaaha il Allaah means -----> None is worthy of worship except Allaah. Allaahu akbar means -----> Allaah is The Greatest, very great. Aoodhubillaahi As-Samee' al-'Aleem min ash-shaytani r-rajeem - min hamzihee wa nafkhihee wa nafthihee means -----> I take refuge in Allaah, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing from the accursed Shaytan: from his madness, arrogance and poetry. __________________________________________________ Also mentioned is that some of the scholars held that taking refuge in Allaah before reciting the Qur`an to be legislated in every rak'ah, due to the generality of Allaah's statement: فَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ الْقُرْآنَ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ So when you want to recite the Qur`aan, seek refuge with Allaah from Shaitaan (Satan), the outcast (the cursed one). (An-Nahl, ayah 98) Refer to an-Nawawee, al-Majmu', vol. 3, pg. 270; al-Albanee, Tamaam al-Minnah, pp. 176-177. Prophetic Solution for Shaytan’s Whispers/Deceptions

Bismillaah Al-Hamdulillaah wa salatu wa salaamu 'ala rasulullaah Amma-ba'd Prophetic Solution for Shaytan's Whispers/Deceptions, by Muhammad bin Jamil Zeeno (rahimahullaah) Question: What if Shaytan tempts us with the question: 'Who created Allaah?' Answer: If Shaytan tempts you with this question, you should seek refuge in Allaah, as Allaah says: وَإِمَّا يَنْزَغَنَّكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ نَزْغ ٌ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ إِنَّه ُ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ And if an evil whisper from Shaytaan (Satan) tries to turn you away (O Muhammad) (from doing good, etc.), then seek refuge in Allaah. Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. (Fussilat, ayah 36) Allaah's Messenger (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) taught us to resist Shaytan's deceptions by saying: Amantoo billaahi wa rusulihi. Allaahu AHad, Allaahus-Samad Lam Yalid Walam Yulad walam Yakun Lahu Kufuwan AHad. (I believe in Allaah and His Messengers. He is Allaah, The One, The Self-Sufficient Master, Whom all creatures need. He begets not, nor was He begotten; and there is none co-equal or comparable to Him.) Then spit over the left shoulder three times, then seek refuge from Shaytan and cease (whatever is causing you doubt). Then verily this (evil prompting) will go away. Gratitude in time of ease and patience at times of adversity

It is established in the Sahih that the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallaam) said, “Amazing indeed is the affair of the believer, all is good; if he is in times of ease, he shows gratitude and this is good for him; when he is in times of adversity, he is patient and steadfast and this is good for him. This only applies for the believer.” ¹ Gratitude and patience gather together all good and the believer is acquiring this goodness at all times and profiting in all circumstances. In the Sahih it is recorded that the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallaam) said, “The believer is not afflicted by any concern, worry or harm except that it would be a means for Allaah expiating his sins.” ² So at times of ease the believer attain two blessings: the blessings of having that time of ease and the blessing of being grateful for it. The latter is the greater blessing. At times of adversity the believer attains three blessings: the expiation of sins, being patient, and the adversity being made easy for him to face. This is because when he knows that he will have his reward with Allaah, the matter becomes easy for him to bear. ~ [Transcribed from: The Tree of Faith, Pages 78-79|By: Shaykh Abdurahman Al-Saa'di|Published by: Al-Hidaayah 2004] Footnotes: 1 Muslim [#2999] 2 Al-Bukhari [#5641, 5642] and Muslim [#2573]

There's No One From Amongst You, Except That His Lord Will Speak To Him

There's No One From Amongst You, Except That His Lord Will Speak To Him

Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allaah have mercy upon him) mentioned in his writing Al-Aqeedah Al-Waasitiyyah:

The seventh narration which establishes the speech (of Allaah):

It is His (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) statement: "There's no one from amongst you, except that his Lord will speak to him and there will be no translator between them."

Imaam Al-Allaamaah Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Saalih al-Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy upon him) stated explaining this: "Allaah will speak to him and there will be no translator between them. That will take place on the Day of Judgment. The translator is the one who is between two individuals who speak different languages. He relays the speech of one to the other.

There are four conditions that have to be met in relation to the one who translates: Trustworthiness, that he is knowledgeable of the language he is translating from, he is knowledgeable of the language he is translating to and he is knowledgeable of the topic that he translating.

In this narration it's established that from the characteristics of Allaah is: The speech, and it is by way of a voice that is heard and understood.

The person should be afraid from that speech which will take place between him and his Lord that he will become exposed in front of Allaah, when Allaah addresses him about his sins. Therefore, leave off the acts of sin and have fear of Allaah." Hasten to do good deeds before you are Overtaken!

Abu Hurairah, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported: “The Messenger of Allaah, may Allaah bless him and raise his rank, said, “Hasten to do good deeds before you are overtaken by one of the seven afflictions.” Then (giving a warning) he said, “Are you waiting for poverty which will make you unmindful of devotion, or prosperity which will make you corrupt, or a disease which will disable you, or senility which will make you mentally unstable, or sudden death which will take you all of a sudden, or Ad-Dajjal who is the worst expected, or the Hour; and the Hour will be most grievous and most bitter.” [Collected by At-Tirmidhi who said: "This hadeeth has a good chain"] Sheikh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-’Uthaymeen, may Allaah have mercy upon, explains this hadeeth by saying: “Hasten to do good deeds before you are overtaken by one of the seven afflictions.” Meaning work and rush before one of these seven things afflict you that the Messenger, may Allaah bless him and grant him peace, mentioned in this hadeeth. Either; “are you waiting for poverty which will make you unmindful of devotion” Whereby a person is afflicted with poverty that causes him to forget about the remembrance of his Lord. Because poverty, may Allaah protect us all from it, is an evil cloak that envelopes the slave. If he is poor he becomes in need of food, drink, clothing, shelter, a spouse, etc. and he finds none of that. Until the point the earth (seems to) close in on him and he goes searching to find those affairs and forgets about the remembrance of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic. Nor is he able to perform obedience in its’ desired manner. Likewise many acts of obedience pass him by that require wealth like zakaat, charity, emancipation, hajj, spending in the way of Allaah and the likes. Or; “prosperity which will make you corrupt” Whereas Allaah enriches a person and opens up the dunya for him thus he becomes oppressive and deems himself free of need from his Lord. So he does not uphold what Allaah obligated upon him nor does he cease from what Allaah prohibited him from. Allaah, the Most High, says: “Nay! Indeed man transgresses. Because he sees himself self-sufficient.”[96:6,7] Likewise; “or a disease which will disable you” A sickness that ruins a persons life. Because as long as a person is healthy then he is energetic, delightful and the dunya is open in front of him but if he becomes sick his body weakens, and his soul becomes sluggish and restricted and he turns into one who is constantly sad and depressed and so his life becomes ruined. Or; “senility which will make you mentally unstable” Meaning old-age that destroys the capability of a person. As Allaah says: “Allaah is the one who created you from weakness, then made after weakness strength, then made after strength weakness and white hair. He creates what He wills, and He is the Knowing, the Competent.”[31:54] So as long as a person is active and youthful he performs obedience with a zeal, perfomrs abulution with energy, prays with enthusiasm, goes out to seek knowledge with determination however when he becomes old as Allaah said about Zakariyyah: “My Lord, indeed my bones have weakened, and my head has filled with white.”[19:4] Meaning the bones have become weakened and he loses his strength and he isn’t able of doing what he used to when he was young as the poet said: “Oh I wish that youthfulness would return one day, so that I can inform it about what this old-age has done.” “or sudden death which will take you all of a sudden” When a person dies his actions are cut off and he is no longer able to perform deeds. How many people have died (at a time) when they thought they weren’t going to die?! How many people have died and he was in his prime, healthy in a fiery accident or the flipping of a car or the collapsing of a wall on him or heart failure, many things that a person can die from even though he may be young. Therefore, hasten to do good deeds because you do not know, you might die while speaking to your family or you might die and you are on your bed or you might die while you’re getting ready to eat lunch, you leave out the house and say to your family “get lunch ready” but you never return to eat it or you might die while you’re in your car or on a trip, therefore hasten! From those matters also; “or Ad-Dajjaal who is the worst expected” Meaning or are you waiting for the Dajjaal who is a wicked liar that will be sent at the end of time inviting the people to worship him and decieving them. Many of the creation will be put to trial by him except those whom Allaah wills not. Due to this, we have been commanded to seek refuge with Allaah from him in every prayer. The Messenger, may Allaah bless him and grant him peace, said: “When one of you says the last tashahhud let him say: “Oh Allaah I seek refuge with You from the punishment of Hell, the punishment of the grave, the trials of life and death and the trial of the Anti-Christ Ad-Dajjaal.” The Dajjaal is a (human) man however he is one-eyed, evil, a disbeliever and rebellious. The word kaafir, i.e. disbeliever, has been written between his eyes and every believer will read it and not the evil-doer. The disbeliever will not read it even if he may be literate and the believer will read it even if he may be illiterate and this is from the signs of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic. This is the Dajjaal who will invite the people to worship him saying: “I am your lord” so if they obey him, he will enter them into paradise and if they disobey him, he will enter them into hell. But what is his paradise and hell? His paradise is actually hell and his hell is actually paradise. However he will decieve the people into thinking that this person who obeyed him has entered paradise but it is really hell and if anyone disobeys him he enters them into hell which is really paradise, sweet tasting water, pleasant, bliss. The Messenger, may Allaah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Indeed he is going to come with the likeness of paradise and hell, so that which he says is paradise is hell.” But he will deceive the people into thinking that the person who obeys him enters paradise and the one who disobeys him enters hell but it is contrary to that. He will also come to people in the desert and it will be barren and the udders of their livestock will have no milk. So he will call them saying: “I am your lord”, and they will answer him and then he will command the sky to rain and it will do so and he will command the earth to produce vegetation and it will do so and they will come in the morning and the land will be fertile and their livestock will return to them with their udders full with milk, the camels humps will be very lengthy from fullness and plumpness and as a result of this they will continue to worship him however they profited in the dunya only and wasted their Hereafter and Allaah’s refuge is sought. they took him as a lord besides Allaah. The Messenger, may Allaah bless him and grant him peace, said about the Dajjaal that he is ”the worst expected” may Allaah protect us from his trial. Then he said: “or the Hour” Which is the seventh affliction, meaning or are you waiting for the establishment of the Hour, “for the Hour will be most grievous and most bitter” Meaning a severe catastrophe and a bitter tasting thing. Allaah, the Most High, says: “But the Hour is their appointment [for due punishment], and the Hour is more disastrous and more bitter.” [54:46] So briefly, a person will not be free from one of these seven afflictions and all of them prevent one from actions therefore he must hasten now while he is healthy, energetic, still young, free, in safety and all praise is for Allaah. Let him hasten to do righteous actions before it passes him by and he becomes remorseful when remorse will be to no avail. I ask Allaah to make me and you from those who hasten and race towards the good. ~ [Sheikh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-’Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah)|Translated by: Abu Fouzaan Qaasim|Arabic Source: Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen site]

Who is Considered a "Strong Believer"?

In the Name of Allaah, the All-Merciful... Imaam Muslim [d.261] (may Allaah have Mercy on him) collected an amazing hadeeth in his Chapter on Qadr in his large collection of authentic narrations known asSaheeh Muslim. The scholars refer to this hadeeth as “the Hadeeth of the Strong Believer.” On the authority of Aboo Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him), the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) said: المُؤْمِنُ القَوِيُّ خَيْرٌ وَأَحَبُّ إِلَى اللهِ مِنَ المُؤْمِنِ الضَّعِيفِ، وَفِي كُلٍّ خَيْرٌ، احْرِصْ عَلَى مَا يَنْفَعُكَ، وَاسْتَعِنْ بِاللهِ، وَلَا تَعْجِزْ، وَإِنْ أَصَابَكَ شَيْءٌ فَلَا تَقُلْ: لَوْ أَنِّي فَعَلْتُ كَانَ كَذَا وَكَذَا لَمْ يُصِبْنِي كَذَا، وَلَكِنْ قُلْ: قَدَرُ اللهِ وَمَا شَاءَ فَعَلَ، فَإِنَّ لَوْ تَفْتَحُ عَمَلَ الشَّيْطَانِ “The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allaah than the weak believer, while there is (still) goodness in both. Guard over that which benefits you, seek Allaah’s Assistance, do not be weak (by passing up chances to do good), and if a trial befalls you, don’t say ‘Had I only done such and such, this would not have happened,’ but rather say, ‘Qadarullaahi wa maa shaa’ fa’al’ (This is Allaah’s Decree, and He does what He wills), for verily the phrase ‘Had I only…” makes way for the work of Shaytaan.” As you may know, Imaam Muslim did not provide his book with any chapter titles. It was al-Haafith An-Nawawee [d.676] (may Allaah have Mercy on him) who later added the titles. For this hadeeth, he added the title: باب في الأمر بالقوة وترك العجز والاستعانة بالله وتفويض المقادير لله Chapter: The Order to be Strong and Shun Weakness, Seek Allaah’s Help, and Ascribe all Affairs that Occur to Allaah The Scholars' Understanding of a Strong Believer Al-Haafith An-Nawawee (may Allaah have Mercy on him) said: The intended meaning of strength here is a firm will and a desire to work for the Hereafter. So the one being described as a strong believer is more bold and stern against the enemy in jihaad (with the army of an established Muslim goverment), quicker to go out (to fight) and seek it out, more firm in the way he enjoins the good and forbids the evil, (more firm) in his patience with the harms he faces throughout all of that, and stronger in the way he carries out difficult tasks for Allaah’s Sake. He is more inclined to pray, fast, make thikr, and perform the rest of the acts of worship, and he is more active in seeking after these affairs, and he keeps a closer watch over his performance of them. [1] Shaykh Al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [d.728] (may Allaah have Mercy on him)referred to this hadeeth when discussing the prayer of a sick person standing up, saying: As for the prayer of those who can not properly perform it, then their prayer is acceptable in any way that it is possible for them to perform it, according to their abilities, as this is what they have been ordered with in this circumstance, while the one who is capable of performing his prayers properly is more sound and more virtuous, as the Prophet (sallaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) said, ‘The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allaah than the weak believer, while there is goodness in both.’ [2] We see that Ibn Taymiyyah understood that physical strength and ability is something found with a strong believer. His illustrious student, al-’Allaamah Ibn Qayyim Al-Jowziyyah [d.751] (may Allaah have Mercy on him), said: The one who has insight into the Truth and an awareness of it, but he is weak and has no strength to implement it or ability to call to it, then this is the situation of the weak believer. The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allaah than him. [3] We can see that Ibn Al-Qayyim understood that courage is from the strength of the believer. Al-’Allaamah Muhammad bin Saalih Al-’Uthaymeen (may Allaah have Mercy on him) said: ‘The strong believer’ is regarding his eemaan, as the intended meaning is not physical strength. [4] This is because physical strength is harmful to a person who uses it to disobey Allaah. So physical strength is neither praiseworthy nor blameworthy in itself. If he uses this strength for what benefits him in this life and the Next, then it is praiseworthy. But if he uses it to disobey Allaah, it becomes blameworthy. So the meaning of strength in his statement (sallallaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam), ‘The strong believer…’ is strength in eemaan, since the word ‘strong’ refers to the word ‘believer’, someone who has eemaan. Similarly, one would say ‘a strong man’ if he was referring to his manhood and masculinity. So the strong believer is strong in his eemaan, because the strong believer has the strength to carry out what Allaah ordered him to do, and to increase upon that by doing extra good deeds however Allaah likes. As for the weak believer, his eemaan is weak, and that hinders him from performing his duties and avoiding what is prohibited, so he is always falling short. [5] Shaykh Saalih Al-Fowzaan (may Allaah preserve him) said: The believer who is strong in his eemaan, body, and actions, is better than the weak believer, the one who has weak eemaan, or a weak body or weak actions. That is because the strong believer is productive and accomplishes things for the Muslims, and thus they benefit from his physical strength, actions, and his strong eemaan. They benefit greatly from that in military campaigns in Allaah’s Way, in other affairs that benefit the Muslims, and in defending Islaam and the Muslims, he can humiliate the enemies (when that is called for), and can stand up to their challenges. This is something the weak believer can not do. So from this angle the strong believer is better than the weak one, while there is good in both, since eemaan in its entirity is good, so there is good in the weak believer. But the strong believer has more goodness for himself, his Religion, and his brother Muslims. So this hadeeth is an encouragement to have strength, as Islaam is the Religion on strength, the Religion of honor, the Religion of prestige! The Muslims are always to be possessors of strength, as Allaah, the Glorified and Exalted, says [6]: ( And prepare for them all the might you can gather, including riding beasts, to threaten Allaah’s and your enemies with ) And Allaah, Most High, says [7]: ( And to Allaah belongs all Honor, and to His Messenger, and to the Muslims ) And He, Most High, says [8]: ( And you will be the superior ones, if you are indeed believers ) So the strength that is sought from us in Islaam is strength in eemaan and ‘aqeedah, as well as strength in our actions and bodies, because all of this brings forth good things for the Muslims. [9] A Self-Explaining Hadeeth? When one looks at the wording of the hadeeth itself, he finds something very interesting. Notice that the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) started by saying, what means, “The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allaah than the weak believer, while there is good in both…” and then it may seem like the subject of the hadeeth shifts to something else. Rather, this hadeeth is an encouragement to be a strong believer from the beginning to the end! After informing us about the superiority of the strong believer, the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) detailed some ways to become a strong believer, giving us four pieces of advice, all of them related to eemaan: Guard over what benefits you Seek Allaah’s Assistance Don’t lend yourself to things devoid of benefit Affirm the qadr of Allaah in times of calamity, and do not give in to the Shaytaan by questioning what would have happened had you taken a different course of action. All these things are matters that will increase you in eemaan, thus making you a stronger believer. So the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) was not moving into another topic here, rather he was giving us some actual steps to take that will help us become strong believers. So the first source of explanation of this hadeeth, the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) himself, already answered these natural questions that arise: “What is a strong believer?” and “How do I become one?” It’s all here in this short and concise hadeeth! The strong believer is the one who guards over that which benefits him, seeks Allaah’s Aid, doesn’t lend himself to affairs devoid of benefit, and understands firmly that what happens is from Allaah’s Qadr (Divine Will), saying, “Qadarullaahi wa maa shaa’ fa’al“, among the other things that his eemaan would necessitate. Conclusion The believer who has strong eemaan is more likely to be fit and in shape. This is because he understands the importance of jihaad (participation in the military in a Muslim country under organized, established leadership in efforts to protect the Religion of Islaam), and staying in shape in preparation for it, while the weak believer may easily get fat and out of shape, from his overeating and laziness. So physical strength is a direct result of strength in eemaan. Conversely, a person could be a topnotch bodybuilder and superb athlete, but he can’t even wake up for prayer in the morning, and Allaah is the One whose Help is sought! So clearly his strength is not making him better nor more beloved to Allaah, so how could he be considered a strong believer?! [10] And Allaah knows best. Written by: Moosaa Richardson (1423/5/23), revised and updated (1424/1/11), revised and updated again (1433/5/19). FOOTNOTES [1] Sharh Muslim (16/214) [2] Majmoo’ Al-Fataawee (12/479) [3] Ad-Daa’ Wad-Dawaa’ (p.239, Daar Ibn Khuzaymah printing) [4] It is not understood from the words of our shaykh that the strong believer should be physically weak or devoid of physical strength. Rather, he only clarified that the real strength being referred to in this hadeeth is strength in eemaan. In fact, strength in eemaan will not allow a person to become out of shape or incapable if he has the ability to be physically strong. This point is dealt with later in the article. [5] Sharh Riyaadhis-Saaliheen (3/91-92) [6] the meaning of Soorah Al-Anfaal (8):60 [7] the meaning of Soorah Al-Munaafiqoon (63):8 [8] the meaning of Soorah Aali ‘Imraan (3):139 [9] Al-Muntaqaa min Fataawee Shaykh Saalih Al-Fowzaan (5/380-381) [10] This is the point that Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen made, that physical strength is blameworthy if it is not used to obey Allaah. Some Verses of the Qur’aan mentioned by Imaam Ibnul-Qayyim (rahimahullaah) on Tawheed—by Shaikh Abdur-Razzaaq Al-Badr(may Allaah preserve him)

The Oneness of Allaah in His Names, Attributes and Actions [Soorah Al-Hadeed Aayaat: 1-6] Whatsoever is in the heavens and the earth glorifies Allah, and He is the All-Mighty, All-Wise. His is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, It is He Who gives life and causes death; and He is Able to do all things. He is the First (nothing is before Him) and the Last (nothing is after Him), the Most High (nothing is above Him) and the Most Near (nothing is nearer than Him). And He is the All-Knower of everything. He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days and then Istawa (rose over) the Throne (in a manner that suits His Majesty). He knows what goes into the earth and what comes forth from it, what descends from the heaven and what ascends thereto. And He is with you (by His Knowledge) wheresoever you may be. And Allah is the All-Seer of what you do. His is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. And to Allah return all the matters (for decision). He merges night into day (i.e. the decrease in the hours of the night is added into the hours of the day), and merges day into night (i.e. the decrease in the hours of the day is added into the hours of the night), and He has full knowledge of whatsoever is in the breasts. [Soorah Taahaa: Aayaat:4-7] ”A revelation from Him (Allah) Who has created the earth and high heavens. The Most Beneficent (Allah) Istawa (rose over) the (Mighty) Throne (in a manner that suits His Majesty). To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth, and all that is between them, and all that is under the soil. And if you (O Muhammad) speak (the invocation) aloud, then verily, He knows the secret and that which is yet more hidden.” [Soorah Al-Hashar: Aayaat:22-24] He is Allah, than Whom there is La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He) the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen (open). He is the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful. He is Allah than Whom there is La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He) the King, the Holy, the One Free from all defects, the Giver of security, the Watcher over His creatures, the All-Mighty, the Compeller, the Supreme. Glory be to Allah! (High is He) above all that they associate as partners with Him. He is Allah, the Creator, the Inventor of all things, the Bestower of forms. To Him belong the Best Names . All that is in the heavens and the earth glorify Him. And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. [Soorah As-Sajdah: Aayaat:1- 9] Alif-Lam-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur'an, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings.] The revelation of the Book (this Qur’an) is from the Lord of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists) in which there is not doubt! Or say they: “He (Muhammad) has fabricated it?” Nay, it is the truth from your Lord, that you may warn a people to whom no warner has come before you (O Muhammad), in order that they may be guided. Allah it is He Who has created the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them in six Days. Then He Istawa (rose over) the Throne (in a manner that suits His Majesty). You (mankind) have none, besides Him, as a Wali (protector or helper etc.) or an intercessor. Will you not then remember (or be admonished)? He arranges (every) affair from the heavens to the earth, then it (affair) will go up to Him, in one Day, the space whereof is a thousand years of your reckoning (i.e. reckoning of our present world’s time). That is He, the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen, the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. Who made everything He has created good, and He began the creation of man from clay. Then He made his offspring from semen of worthless water (male and female sexual discharge). Then He fashioned him in due proportion, and breathed into him the soul (created by Allah for that person), and He gave you hearing (ears), sight (eyes) and hearts. Little is the thanks you give! [Soorah Aali Imraan: Aayah:5] Truly, nothing is hidden from Allah, in the earth or in the heavens. [Soorah Al-ikhlaas] Say (O Muhammad): “He is Allah, (the) One. Allah-us-Samad (The Self-Sufficient Master, Whom all creatures need, He neither eats nor drinks). He begets not, nor was He begotten; And there is none co-equal or comparable unto Him. Do not bear witness for any of the people of Islaam

Do not bear witness for any of the people of Islaam (i.e that he is a person of Paradise or of the fire) due to the good or bad deed, since you do not know what his final action before his death will be. You hope for Allaah’s Mercy for him and you fear for him because of his sins. You do not know what has been destined for him at he time of his death ¹ as regards repentance and what Allaah has destined for that time if he dies upon Islaam. You hope for Allaah’s Mercy for him and you fear for him because of his sins.” ~ [Excepted from: Explanation of the Creed of Imaam al-Barabahaaree (rahimahullaah), (d. 329H), Page 44] Footnote: 1 Al-Miqdaad ibn al-Aswad (radiallaahu anhu) said: I will not say anything good or bad about a person until I see how he ends, after something I heard from the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallaam). It was said: “What did you hear?” He said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallaam) say, “The heart of the son of Aadam is agitated more severly than the cooking pot when it boils.” (Reported by Ahmad, Al-Haakim and Ibn Abee `Aasim in as-Sunnah (no.226). Declared Saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaanee in Saheehul-Jaami’ (5023). Anas (radiallaahu anhu) reports that the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallaam) said, “Do not be delighted by the action of anyone until you see how he ends up.”(Reported by Ahmad and Ibn Abee `Aasin in as-Sunnah (347-353) and declared saheeh by Shaikh al-Albaanee in Silsilatul-Ahaadeethis-Saheehah (no. 1334)

The causes of the Hardening of the Heart and how to Escape this

Imam ‘Abdul ‘Azeez Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy upon him and grant him Paradise) The Shaykh was asked: How does a person escape the hardening of the heart and what are the causes of this? Answer: The things that cause the hardening of the heart are sins and disobedience, frequent heedlessness [i.e. of the remembrance of Allaah] and accompanying the heedless and immoral sinners. All of these corruptive [behaviours] cause the hardening of the heart. As for the softening, purity and tranquillity of the heart, then this is achieved through the obedience of Allaah (the Mighty and Majestic), accompanying the righteous and preserving ones time with the remembrance of Allaah, recitation of the Quran and seeking forgiveness. Whosoever preserves his time by [utilising it] for the remembrance of Allaah, recitation of the Quran, and accompanying the righteous and staying away from the heedless and wicked, then verily his heart will be healthy and soft. Allaah, The Most High Said: “Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do the hearts find rest.” [Surat Ar-Ra`d 13:28] ~ [Majmoo’ Fataawa Wa Maqaalaat Ibn Baaz , Volume 5]

The Means aiding one to attain tranquility in the heart

Jubayr Ibn Mut’im (radiyallaahu-anhu) said: The Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) said: ”There are three things the heart of the believer does not harbor hatred towards: Performance of actions sincerely for the sake of Allaah, giving sincere advise to those in charge of the affairs of the Muslims (i.e. the Muslim rulers) and sticking to the Jamaa’ah (i.e. sticking to the Scholars upon the truth and not distancing oneself from unity behind a Muslim ruler, and not rebelling against the ruler]. For indeed, their supplication surrounds those behind them- (the ones under their authority)” [Reported by Ibn Maajah (Number:3056-also see saheeh At-targheeb Wat-Tarheeb (No:92) of Imaam albaanee (rahimahullaah) And what is well known is that the one who is sincere in his religion will not carry (in his heart), except sincere love for his Muslim brothers. And with this he becomes happy when good (reaches) them and he feels sad when calamity befalls them, whether that (occurs) in their religious or worldly affairs. ~ [Source: Al-Inshiraah As-Sadr: page: 162|By: Markazus Salafi]

The Two Declarations of Faith

In the Name of Allaah, the Extremely Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy. Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said:(1) I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship save Allaah Alone; the One Who has no partner. A declaration (kalimah) by which the heavens and the earth were established, the entire creation was created, and with which Allaah (ta`aala) sent His Messengers, revealed His Books, and prescribed Islaamic laws. Because of it, the scales were appointed, the records established and the marketplace for Paradise and Hell-Fire was erected. On account of this declaration, creation was divided into the believers and the disbelievers, the pious and the wicked. It is the purpose for creation, commandment, reward and punishment. It is the sole truth for which the creation was fashioned. The questioning and reckoning (of man) will be about this testification and its associated rights; and it is upon this testification that reward and punishment will be doled out. Upon it, the Qiblah was assigned, the religion was founded, and the swords of Jihaad were unsheathed. It is Allaah’s sole right upon all the servants. It is the statement of Islaam and the key to the Abode of Peace (Paradise). It is the reason for which both the prior and later generations will be questioned. For surely, the feet of the slave will cease to move from before Allaah until he is questioned concerning two matters: ‘Who did you worship?’ and ‘How did you respond to the Messengers?’ So the response to the first question is through fulfilling ‘There is no deity worthy of worship save Allaah Alone,’ in knowledge, affirmation, and action. And the response to the second question is through fulfilling ‘Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allaah,’ in knowledge, affirmation, submission and obedience. I further testify that Muhammad ﷺ is His servant and Messenger; His trustee to His Revelation, the choice of His creation, and His ambassador between Him and His slaves(2). He was sent with the true religion and the straight path. Allaah sent him forth as a mercy to al-`Aalameen(3), as a leader for the righteous, and as a proof against the whole of creation. He sent him following a cessation of the Messengers, and thereby guided, through him, to the most upright of ways and clearest of paths. He (Allaah) made it binding upon the servants to obey, assist, honor and love him ﷺ, and to fulfill his rights. He barred all paths to His Paradise, so they shall not open for anyone save through the [Messenger's] path. He opened his breast, elevated his mention, and removed from him his burden. He rendered humiliation and misery upon those who defy the Prophet’s commands. There occurs in the Musnad (of Imaam Ahmad) a hadeeth of Abee Muneeb al-Jurashee from `Abdillaah ibn `Umar who said: The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said: I was sent with the sword just before the Last Hour, so that Allaah is worshipped alone without partners. My sustenance was provided for me from under the shadow of my spear. Those who oppose my command were humiliated and made inferior, and whoever imitates a people, he is one of them. Just as humiliation covers those who oppose his command, might is for the people who obey and follow him. Allaah, the Exalted, stated: «So do not become weak (against your enemy), nor be sad, and you will be superior (in victory) if you are indeed (true) believers.»(4) He, the Most High, also stated: «But honor, power, and glory belong to Allaah, His Messenger (Muhammad), and to the believers.»(5) He, the Most High, has said: «So be not weak and ask not for peace (from the enemies of Islaam), while you are having the upper hand. Allaah is with you.»(6) He, the Most High, further stated: «O Prophet (Muhammad)! Allaah is Sufficient for you and for the believers who follow you.»(7) Meaning: Allaah alone is sufficient for you and sufficient for those who follow you, thus you are in need of none besides Him. http://www.istijabah.com/2012/05/13/the-two-declarations-of-faith-part-i-ii/ *** Translated by Umm Sufyaan Faatimah _________________________ (1) Ibn al-Qayyim, Zaadul Ma`ad, 1/34-35 (2) TN: i.e. man. The student of knowledge is careful to not accustom himself to comfort and luxury

With regards to the student of knowledge not chasing after the luxuries and comforts of this world, Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al ‘Uthaymeen rahimahullaah comments: (The author’s advice), “do not accustom yourself to comfort and luxury”. This is advice to be said to the student of knowledge and (also) to other than the student of knowledge – because accustoming oneself to that is contrary to the guidance of the Prophet sall Allaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam. For indeed he used to forbid from an abundance of luxuriousness and he would command with walking barefoot sometimes. And a person who has become accustomed to a luxurious life will find it difficult when he encounters (certain) matters – because sometimes there will come to him matters in a form where he is not able to have the luxury (he is used to) along with him. And let us strike an example, with the example which we have mentioned in the hadeeth: he would command with walking barefoot sometimes. Some people do not walk barefoot – always there is a sock upon him, and upon it a leather sock, and upon it a shoe. You will not find him walking, this man, if a temporary impediment were to occur to him and he were to be told to walk 500 metres without any protection for the foot; you would find that extremely difficult upon him. And sometimes his foot would bleed from the contact with the ground. However if he were to accustom himself to a roughness and to leaving off always having comfort, then he would attain much good. So if the (person’s) body is not accustomed to the like of these matters (of forsaking luxury), then he will have no manaa’ah (strength and toughness). You will find him feeling pain from anything from that (affair which is difficult). However if he has manaa’ah then he will not be bothered by it. praise for the Qur’an bearer

Imam al-Jazari’s praise for the Qur’an bearer Taken from the Muqaddimah of ‘Tayyibat al-Nashr.’ وبعد: فالإنسان ليس يشرف *** إلا بما يحفظه ويعرف A person is not honoured or raised Except by what he knows and has memorised لذاك كان حاملو القرآن *** أشراف الأمة أولى الإحسان For that reason the bearers of Qur’an Are the nobles of this Ummah and its righteous وإنهم في الناس أهل الله *** وإن ربنا بهم يباهي And they are the people of Allah amongst Mankind * And indeed our Lord has boasted of them وقال في القرآن عنهم وكفى *** بأنه أورثه من اصطفى He spoke of them in the Qur’an, and it is sufficient That He gives it (the Qur’an) to those He has chosen ** وهو في الأخرى شافع مشفع *** فيه وفوله عليه يسمع And in the Hereafter, it is an ardent intercessor And its statement is something surely heard يعطى به الملك مع الخلد إذا *** توجه تاج الكرامة كذا By it a person is given the dominion and immortality And likewise, he is given the crown of honour يقرا ويرقى درج الجنان *** وأبواه منه يكسيان He’ll read and ascend the ranks of Paradise by it And his parents will also be clothed by it *** فليحرص السعيد في تحصيله *** ولا يمل قط من ترتيله So let a person strive to attain it And let him never tire of its recitation. ____ * Due to the hadith: ‘Indeed Allah has people from amongst Mankind. The people of Qur’an, they are the people of Allah and His Specialties.’ [Ahmad, Ibn Majah] ** Due to the verse in Soorah Fatir: ثُمَّ أَوْرَثْنَا الْكِتَابَ الَّذِينَ اصْطَفَيْنَا مِنْ عِبَادِنَا فَمِنْهُمْ ظَالِمٌ لِّنَفْسِهِ وَمِنْهُم مُّقْتَصِدٌ وَمِنْهُمْ سَابِقٌ بِالْخَيْرَاتِ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ ذَلِكَ هُوَ الْفَضْلُ الْكَبِيرُ “Then We gave the Book for inheritance to such of Our slaves whom We chose…” [Fatir: 32] *** Due to the hadith: ‘The Qur’aan will meet its companion on the Day of Resurrection when his grave is opened for him, in the form of a pale man. It will say to him, ‘Do you recognize me?’ He will say: ‘I do not recognize you.’ It will say: ‘I am your companion the Qur’aan, who kept you thirsty on hot days and kept you awake at night. Every merchant benefits from his business and today you will benefit from your good deeds.’ He will be given dominion in his right hand and eternity in his left, and there will be placed on his head a crown of dignity, and his parents will be clothed with priceless garments the like of which have never been seen in this world. They will say: ‘Why have we been clothed with this?’ It will be said: ‘Because your son used to recite Qur’aan.’ Then it will be said to him: ‘Recite and ascend in the degrees of Paradise,’ and he will continue to ascend so long as he recites, either at a fast pace or a slow pace.’ [Ahmad, Ibn Majah]

The Virtues Of Makkah & Madeenah

The Delegation of Allah! Is the prayer of the one who consumes alcohol accepted?

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

"O you who believe! Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), and gambling, and Al-Ansaab (stone altars for sacrifices to idols, jinn, etc), and Al-Azlaam (arrows for seeking luck or decision) are an abomination of Shaytaan's (Satan's) handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be successful" [Surah al-Maa'idah:90]

As for his prayers, then it will not be accepted for forty days. As it comes in the narration of Abd-Allaah ibn `Amr said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
"Whoever drinks alcohol and gets drunk, his prayers will not be accepted for forty days, and if he dies he will go to Hell, but if he repents, Allaah will accept his repentance. If he drinks wine again and gets drunk, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days, and if he dies he will go to Hell, but if he repents, Allaah will accept his repentance. If he drinks wine again and gets drunk, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days, and if he dies he will go to Hell, but if he repents, Allaah will accept his repentance. If he does that again, Allaah will give him to drink of the mud of khabaal on the Day of Resurrection." They said, "O Messenger of Allaah, what is the mud of khabaal?" He said, "The juice of the people of Hell."

[Narrated by Ibn Maajah, 3377; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah, 2722]

Abu `Abd-Allaah ibn Mandah said:
The phrase "his prayers will not be accepted" means that he will not be rewarded for his prayers for forty days, as a punishment for drinking alcohol. This is like what they said about the one who speaks when the imam is delivering the khutbah on Friday: he prays Jumu'ah [Friday prayer] but there is no Jumu'ah for him, meaning that he will not be given the reward for praying Jumu'ah, as a punishment for his sin.

[Ta'zeem Qadr al-Salaah, 2/587, 588]

An-Nawawi said:
"With regard to his prayer not being accepted, what this means is that he will not be rewarded for it, even though it is valid, and he does not have to repeat it"

And Allaah Knows Best
